Vegetarian Options For Thanksgiving Dinner

The first Thanksgiving, in 1621, inspired an American tradition of a large meal with friends and family. It became a national holiday by executive order in 1863. Until then, every state had its own Thanksgiving day holiday. The proclamation changed that by making the last Thursday in November the official, national holiday. In 1941, that date was changed to the fourth Thursday, instead.

While everyone has their own special traditions, some dishes are universally recognized as part of the Thanksgiving feast. Most of these involve meat or animal products. This can be problematic for families that have vegetarian or vegan members. Indeed, there are many, easy changes you can make to make your traditional fixings vegan- or vegetarian-friendly, without sacrificing taste. Some, like green bean casserole, cranberry sauce, and sweet potatoes, are probably already vegetarian, or can be made so with a few minor substitutions.

One simple fix is to substitute vegetable stock for chicken stock in your dressing or mashed potatoes. In addition to being vegetarian, it is also cholesterol free. This is an especially easy substitution for those who use boxed or canned stock. In many cases, this is the only change you need to make to your mashed potatoes and dressing to make them vegetarian. Of course, cooking the dressing outside the bird is also necessary for strict vegetarians.

For vegans, any animal product is off-limits. This requires a few more substitutions, but, generally not more effort. Simply using soy-based margarine instead of butter goes a long way toward making dinner vegan-friendly fare.

You’ll also have to replace the milk. You can use almond, hemp, or soy milk in place of regular milk in almost any recipe. Coconut cream or milk is a great substitute for cream because it has a great texture and a high fat content. Like soy margarine, it is also cholesterol free.

Sadly, not all recipes are easy to make vegetarian or vegan. For example, pumpkin pie isn’t easy to make vegan; apple pie, however is. Instead of using lard or butter, use a vegetable shortening instead in your piecrust. Instead of using pats of butter on top of the apples, use soy margarine. And then there’s the turkey. This is the one staple that really can’t be replaced. There are fake turkeys made with plant-based materials. They are made out of the common meat substitutes: soy and wheat gluten. An imitation turkey may look like a reasonable facsimile, but it won’t taste the same. It’s no big secret that we’re not all vegetarians at Food for Friends, in fact even 70% of our customers claim to be meat eaters. 8 years ago, Ramin and Jane wanted to take over a restaurant in a great location in Brighton and chose this ‘hippy student veggie cafe’ in the middle of the bustling South Lanes. They decided to keep the name (it’s a winner!) and gave the decor and menu a drastic facelift while keeping the dishes vegetarian and vegan.The focus at Food for Friends isn’t on health but on tasty and modern vegetarian cooking using the freshest and, where possible, most local ingredients we can find. The fresher the produce, the tastier it is. It’s also true that produce loses its nutritional value over time so buying fresh is very important for taking as many nutrients as you can for a healthy immune system. We love using fresh watercress in summer because of its fantastic peppery and mustard flavours, at the same time it’s rich in nutrients including iron and calcium. Take butternut squash in winter with its nutty taste, while also providing us with a great source of dietary fibre. Flavour is essential for cooking all types of dishes but we think it’s especially important to use the best combinations of spices and fresh herbs in vegetarian dishes to make the ingredients really shine! This is even more important with meat replacements such as tofu which doesn’t stand out on its own but with the right flavour friends it can really sparkle. Coriander, for example, is a rich source of minerals and promotes digestion. Paprika is a regular player on our menu for its smoky kick and is well known for its antibacterial properties. There’s no denying the fantastically aromatic taste of ginger and it’s also great for the stomach and for fighting colds! At Food for Friends our priority is definitely making delicious and original fresh vegetarian dishes which have the bonus of using healthy ingredients. Some dishes are pretty indulgent and perhaps nutritionally challenged (take our Gooey Hot Molten Chocolate Pudding with Baileys Ice cream) but we are firm believers that all foods are fine in moderation. Appetizing and Delicious Vegetarian Dinner Ideas for Vegans!

Being vegetarian doesn’t mean you have to eat dull and flavorless meals and dishes. Vegetarians can also enjoy delicious vegetarian dinner ideas that are easy and quick to make. Vegetarian dishes and vegetarian dinner ideas are very easy to find in restaurants and most of the vegan dishes can be prepared at home using basic cooking ideas with easily available vegetarian fruits, vegetables, cheese, tofu, nuts, creams and spices.

One of the vegetarian dinner ideas that you and your family will love is Mexican dish layered with spicy Mexican spices. Just layer shredded cheddar cheese, corn tortillas, tomato sauce, diced onions and spicy Mexican spices such as taco seasoning making several alternate layers. Then bake the layered tortillas in an oven until the cheese is soften and melts away. Help your plate with a creamy, cheesy delicious corn tortillas melted in cheese. Garnish and flavor your cheese tortillas with fresh olives or diced tomatoes, guacamole and sour cream to make extraordinary fiesta.

Vegetarian lasagna is another veggie recipe that is delicious as well as healthy. You will need only some cheaply available vegetables and spices to make this flavorsome vegetarian lasagna. Heat olive oil (3 tablespoons) in a large pan and saut garlic a bit (two crushed garlic cloves). Then add elegant zucchini (2 zucchini thinly sliced), eggplant (1 large chopped) and mushrooms (cup of chopped mushrooms). At the same time you can boil your lasagna noodles (whole wheat lasagna noodles). Once the vegetables are completely done, layer the lasagna noodles with your vegetable mixture, cheeses and pasta sauce in a baking dish. Finally sprinkle oregano and cheese on the last layer and use some other flavoring and seasonings instead of salt to make your vegetarian lasagna mouthwatering and full of flavor.

You can also make your Italian vegetarian lasagna which is the main Italian dish. All you need is whole wheat lasagna package noodles, frozen spinach (raw), half cup of parmesan cheese, cottage cheese (low-fat 3 cups), pasta sauce (3 cups) and finally skimmed mozzarella cheese 3 cups. Blend cottage and parmesan cheese in a large bowl and layer dimly cooked lasagna noodles in a baking dish by spreading half spinach uniformly over the lasagna. Again add one more layer of noodles and top it evenly with cottage cheese together with left over spinach. Add the final lasagna noodle layer over the spinach and lastly evenly spread the pasta on top and finish it with mozzarella cheese on top. Bake it for one and half hour. According to Vegetarian Times, more than 7.8 million Americans embraced a lifestyle that meat-free since 2008. If you do it for moral reasons or to improve your health, the prospect of leaving the meat can be intimidating after a life of flesh-eating. Here are some simple steps to help you to kick off the habit without giving up life as you know it.

Step 1 – Meat is only one thing on your plate. Take a look at your average meal and asks how much of it actually consisted of meat. Chances are, unless you were a truly devoted carnivore, meat were just one part of what you eat each day. As a first step to vegetarianism, just leave the other foods you already enjoy playing a greater role. Love the sandwiches at lunch? Do not give up just because you’re not in the sausage! Try them with only eggs and cheese and see how you feel. You’ll be amazed at how complete and protein-packed meal can be even without pork / chicken / beef. Crazy for Italian food? Swap your meat sauce for a simple marinara and say Ciao to all the extra saturated fat that often goes with eating meat. By providing a meal that would normally consist of meat, a vegetable and a salad, substitute meat with pasta or a vegetarian quiche, or couscous, or a cheese quesadilla. Choices are unlimited.

Step 2 – Make it not late with synthetic substitute meat. One thing that can be a quick stop at a budding vegetarian is the prospect of a regime completely soy products. Soy burgers, soy bacon, soy chicken, this can be a bit much. If you are employed in several daily servings of real meat, not immediately try to fold it with the soy / vegetarian varieties. While several kinds of meat products available at places like the entire market of foods are tasty and healthy, they usually are not carbon copies of their namesakes animal-derived. Veggie burgers, for example, do not taste exactly like regular hamburgers, nor have the same texture. Introduce these foods into your diet gradually and consider that they are not supposed to be an exact reproduction of the meals they imitate. Vitamin B-12 is one. If you are a lacto-ovo vegetarian (meaning you always eat the egg and dairy products), you will probably get an adequate amount of B-12 of these sources. Vegetarians who still eat fish also are not at risk of developing a B-12 deficiency. But those who have abandoned animal products entirely, or become a vegan, have to be careful with their plans to increase this essential vitamin. According to Dr. Winston J Craig, chair of the department of nutrition and health at Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan, fortified foods such as cereals and soybean trait are a good source of B-12 not -animal-derived, as well as some supplements.

If you have health problem, such as diabetes or chronic illness, or if you are pregnant, you should consult a doctor before making any drastic changes in your diet. While going vegetarian is healthy and safe for many people, the decision to give up meat is a serious choice that guarantees proper research. When done correctly, going vegetarian can be a highly positive step on your road to improve health and a more environmentally friendly.
