Vegetarian Options For Thanksgiving Dinner

The first Thanksgiving, in 1621, inspired an American tradition of a large meal with friends and family. It became a national holiday by executive order in 1863. Until then, every state had its own Thanksgiving day holiday. The proclamation changed that by making the last Thursday in November the official, national holiday. In 1941, that date was changed to the fourth Thursday, instead.

While everyone has their own special traditions, some dishes are universally recognized as part of the Thanksgiving feast. Most of these involve meat or animal products. This can be problematic for families that have vegetarian or vegan members. Indeed, there are many, easy changes you can make to make your traditional fixings vegan- or vegetarian-friendly, without sacrificing taste. Some, like green bean casserole, cranberry sauce, and sweet potatoes, are probably already vegetarian, or can be made so with a few minor substitutions.

One simple fix is to substitute vegetable stock for chicken stock in your dressing or mashed potatoes. In addition to being vegetarian, it is also cholesterol free. This is an especially easy substitution for those who use boxed or canned stock. In many cases, this is the only change you need to make to your mashed potatoes and dressing to make them vegetarian. Of course, cooking the dressing outside the bird is also necessary for strict vegetarians.

For vegans, any animal product is off-limits. This requires a few more substitutions, but, generally not more effort. Simply using soy-based margarine instead of butter goes a long way toward making dinner vegan-friendly fare.

You’ll also have to replace the milk. You can use almond, hemp, or soy milk in place of regular milk in almost any recipe. Coconut cream or milk is a great substitute for cream because it has a great texture and a high fat content. Like soy margarine, it is also cholesterol free.

Sadly, not all recipes are easy to make vegetarian or vegan. For example, pumpkin pie isn’t easy to make vegan; apple pie, however is. Instead of using lard or butter, use a vegetable shortening instead in your piecrust. Instead of using pats of butter on top of the apples, use soy margarine. You can probably leave everything else the same. Follow the link to get more information on food recipes.

And then there’s the turkey. This is the one staple that really can’t be replaced. There are fake turkeys made with plant-based materials. They are made out of the common meat substitutes: soy and wheat gluten. An imitation turkey may look like a reasonable facsimile, but it won’t taste the same. With a wealth of sides to choose from, though, your vegetarian and vegan guests probably won’t miss the turkey anyway. Learn more ideas on how to cook a turkey.

Make Your Indian Vegetarian Food Packing, an Interesting Job With Few Ideas!

Many people think the task of packing the tiffin box for themselves, for their kids etc is difficult. This is mainly because the food that we pack everyday or for our picnics and tours should not only be nutritious but should induce hunger every time we open the box. How to make it interesting is the primary question that arises here. There are a few important things to be kept in our mind, while packing the dishes in the tiffin boxes.

First of all, the lunch boxes we carry every day to our job or the lunch boxes of our kids should be able to keep the food items hot and fresh. These food items should not make our stomach upset or heavy, for we need to carry on with our task further without any difficulty. People require variation and flavoursome delicacies to make them want to eat their lunch. The excitement of consuming their favourite dish makes them want to relish every bite of their lunch. Kids as well as adults are always on their toes the entire day. They travel, play, work and lunchtime is the only break they want to savour with home cooked meal. Binging on some delectable delicacies packed in a lunch box is the perfect and a healthy alternative as compared to eating from a canteen.

Indian vegetarian food is a cuisine of sorts. It is flavoursome, colourful and tasty. Chefs all over the world have experimented, innovated and satisfied millions with their unique presentation of Indian vegetarian cuisine. Indian vegetarian restaurants can be found in every country as they try to appease and re-define vegetarian delicacies. A melange of colour, exotic spices and traditional candour, Indian vegetarian food is the prime reason why people flock to such restaurants. It is the lavish spread, regal in taste and majestic in looks that melts the hearts of foodies.

When packing Indian vegetarian food in a lunch box, utter care should be taken to choose the delicacy. First of all, when planning the menu, make sure the food does not get spoiled or spilled. There are few varieties of Indian vegetarian food you can rely on like Roti, Idli, Puri, etc. which are very easy to prepare and will not get spoiled and are less oily. Packing heavy oily food in the lunch boxes can result in laziness, thus it is better to keep oily food at bay. The Indian cuisine has a plethora of delicacies that can be prepared and whipped within minutes and are considered to nourish and nurture the human body too.

Vegetarian food has always been a healthy option as compared to non-vegetarian dishes. Vegetarian food is said to be high on protein, rich in nutrients and thus considered a nutritious choice for the human anatomy. Restaurants prefer serving vegetarian food over non-vegetarian dishes, as people have started opting for a vegan lifestyle. The Tiffin box service is also a novel facility offered by catering services, who choose to provide home cooked vegetarian food to employees an school going children. It is a cost-effective service and costs less as compared to a restaurant or canteen meal.

If You Want to Make Good Vegetarian Food You Must Have Fresh Ingredients

Looking for somewhere to eat after a strenuous morningâEUR(TM)s shopping in the Brighton Lanes, we stumbled across Food for Friends. ItâEUR(TM)s difficult to miss, sitting proudly on the corner of one of the South Lanes cobbled streets with Perspex hanging signs and white scribbles of their new dishes in vast curved windows.
It’s no big secret that we’re not all vegetarians at Food for Friends, in fact even 70% of our customers claim to be meat eaters. 8 years ago, Ramin and Jane wanted to take over a restaurant in a great location in Brighton and chose this ‘hippy student veggie cafe’ in the middle of the bustling South Lanes. They decided to keep the name (it’s a winner!) and gave the decor and menu a drastic facelift while keeping the dishes vegetarian and vegan. The focus at Food for Friends isn’t on health but on tasty and modern vegetarian cooking using the freshest and, where possible, most local ingredients we can find. The fresher the produce, the tastier it is. It’s also true that produce loses its nutritional value over time so buying fresh is very important for taking as many nutrients as you can for a healthy immune system. We love using fresh watercress in summer because of its fantastic peppery and mustard flavours, at the same time it’s rich in nutrients including iron and calcium. Take butternut squash in winter with its nutty taste, while also providing us with a great source of dietary fibre. Flavour is essential for cooking all types of dishes but we think it’s especially important to use the best combinations of spices and fresh herbs in vegetarian dishes to make the ingredients really shine! This is even more important with meat replacements such as tofu which doesn’t stand out on its own but with the right flavour friends it can really sparkle. Coriander, for example, is a rich source of minerals and promotes digestion. Paprika is a regular player on our menu for its smoky kick and is well known for its antibacterial properties. There’s no denying the fantastically aromatic taste of ginger and it’s also great for the stomach and for fighting colds! At Food for Friends our priority is definitely making delicious and original fresh vegetarian dishes which have the bonus of using healthy ingredients. Some dishes are pretty indulgent and perhaps nutritionally challenged (take our Gooey Hot Molten Chocolate Pudding with Baileys Ice cream) but we are firm believers that all foods are fine in moderation. The pure enjoyment of food and relaxed smiles on faces is surely a big health benefit in itself.

Serving Indian Vegetarian Food in a New Style!

Today’s world is extremely fast paced, is it not? There is almost no time to do anything. No, that is incorrect. People are doing a lot of things in little time, which is the way things are today. I think what has suffered the most in this fast paced environment is one’s nutrition. With busy schedules and little time, more and more people are spending less time actually cooking meals, eating out of ready-to-eat boxes and packets which are not the healthiest items to consume. So how does one maintain that balanced diet on a daily basis with such hectic schedules? The answer is tiffin services.

In Mumbai, this is an extremely popular trend. A lot of working and busy professionals opt for these lunchboxes to be delivered either to their homes or their work place. It is a common sight to see men carrying trolleys of tiffin’s at the stations, waiting to transport them to their respective owners.
The ‘dabba’ service, as it is popularly called, is extremely useful and efficient. All you have to do is pre-order your tiffin for however long and your food will be delivered. You would think that this is priced expensively but actually it is extremely affordable. In fact, for young professionals who have just started out in their careers and for students (especially those staying in paying accommodations), the ‘dabbas’ are a great choice. Not only do you save money by not eating outside everyday but you also get home-made like food which is much more nutritious and healthy as compared to the junk that people consume today.

The thing with these lunchboxes is that they serve only Indian vegetarian food, which is also why they are so affordable. So if you feel like eating some meat, you will have to resort to other options. That is not such a bad idea. We are anyway always looking for variety and with these ‘dabbas’, if you save during the week, you can comfortably afford to splurge a bit on the weekend.
The good thing about these ‘dabbas’ is that they offer a variety of cuisines- some days you will eat North Indian food, some days south Indian and so on. This is bound to make food interesting for those who like eating different things every day. In fact, you could also personalise the food to your taste. For instance, if you like spicy food, you could ask for extra spice in your food. If you are salt conscious, you could ask for limited to no salt in your food. Also, if any day you are sure you are not going to be eating at home, you can choose not to call for the dabba that day.

These tiffin services are extremely easy to find. Each area will have a designated dabba service. Come to think of it, the fact that these dabbas serve only Indian vegetarian food is not that bad. It is surely healthy and it is extremely tasty, which is also why people do not mind eating it. If you are too busy to cook your own meals, try ordering the dabbas- definitely worth the effort!

Weight Management and a Vegetarian Diet

Losing weight is often a very difficult task and often requires superhuman efforts and determination to be accomplished. Weight management is not a problem during childhood, though recent studies have indicated an increase in childhood obesity. One of the reasons could be the sedentary life and lack of sporting activities in children. There are different routes which can be taken for weight management. One of the most popular and effective means of weight management is a fruit and raw vegetable diet. Including raw vegetables in the form of salads and smoothies minus sugar can help a great deal in setting an obese body into the right shape.

The humans have evolved from apes who subsist on raw fruits and vegetables and foliage. During the course of evolution, the human body has adapted for a diet of cooked food. Cooked food is easier to digest and is rapidly assimilated by the body. Cooking also entails adding oil, fat, butter and other lipids. This is also rapidly absorbed by the body and is stored in the body in the form of flab under the skin and the body wall.

Raw fruits and vegetables contain a lot of substances like fibers and chlorophyll which cannot be digested by the body. The body spends more energy to digest these components. Fibers also important since they provide bulk to the stools and also help to keep our intestines clean. Lack of fibers in the diet is also one of the reasons why there has been an increase in the incidence of colon cancer in the west. One reason is the overt dependence of people on junk food which is very poor in fibers and nutrients and rich in cholesterol.
Vegetarian diet including a lot of fruits and raw vegetables is a very healthy way of living and in the long run will help in better weight management and also help in preventing many debilitating disease like circulatory ailments, cancer and strokes. Most fruits are low in calorie, rich in vitamins and nutrients and since it is eaten raw would also not require a lot of oil to cook. The same can be said about raw vegetables like cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli and spinach. One important component in most green vegetables is Chlorophyll which contains an important antioxidant; Magnesium which is very effective in flushing out the free radicals from the body. It also helps to wash off the toxins which are formed in the body during the normal process of metabolism.

How to Become a Vegetarian in Three Easy Steps

Given the vegetarian lifestyle? Here are some tips for hassle-free to get started.
Vegetarianism: It is no longer just for hippies!
According to Vegetarian Times, more than 7.8 million Americans embraced a lifestyle that meat-free since 2008. If you do it for moral reasons or to improve your health, the prospect of leaving the meat can be intimidating after a life of flesh-eating. Here are some simple steps to help you to kick off the habit without giving up life as you know it.

Step 1 – Meat is only one thing on your plate. Take a look at your average meal and asks how much of it actually consisted of meat. Chances are, unless you were a truly devoted carnivore, meat were just one part of what you eat each day. As a first step to vegetarianism, just leave the other foods you already enjoy playing a greater role. Love the sandwiches at lunch? Do not give up just because you’re not in the sausage! Try them with only eggs and cheese and see how you feel. You’ll be amazed at how complete and protein-packed meal can be even without pork / chicken / beef. Crazy for Italian food? Swap your meat sauce for a simple marinara and say Ciao to all the extra saturated fat that often goes with eating meat. By providing a meal that would normally consist of meat, a vegetable and a salad, substitute meat with pasta or a vegetarian quiche, or couscous, or a cheese quesadilla. Choices are unlimited.

Step 2 – Make it not late with synthetic substitute meat. One thing that can be a quick stop at a budding vegetarian is the prospect of a regime completely soy products. Soy burgers, soy bacon, soy chicken, this can be a bit much. If you are employed in several daily servings of real meat, not immediately try to fold it with the soy / vegetarian varieties. While several kinds of meat products available at places like the entire market of foods are tasty and healthy, they usually are not carbon copies of their namesakes animal-derived. Veggie burgers, for example, do not taste exactly like regular hamburgers, nor have the same texture. Introduce these foods into your diet gradually and consider that they are not supposed to be an exact reproduction of the meals they imitate. Vegetarian meats are there to expand the vegetarian diet and to provide choice for cookouts and Thanksgiving dinner. The sample with an open mind and realize that, just like regular meat, some types are better-tasting and healthier than others.

Step 3 – Do not forget the vitamins and, in case of doubt, consult a physician while the vegetarian diet is more than adequate to provide the most basic building blocks required by the human body, there are some elements that can be difficult to come near that. Vitamin B-12 is one. If you are a lacto-ovo vegetarian (meaning you always eat the egg and dairy products), you will probably get an adequate amount of B-12 of these sources. Vegetarians who still eat fish also are not at risk of developing a B-12 deficiency. But those who have abandoned animal products entirely, or become a vegan, have to be careful with their plans to increase this essential vitamin. According to Dr. Winston J Craig, chair of the department of nutrition and health at Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan, fortified foods such as cereals and soybean trait are a good source of B-12 not -animal-derived, as well as some supplements.

If you have health problem, such as diabetes or chronic illness, or if you are pregnant, you should consult a doctor before making any drastic changes in your diet. While going vegetarian is healthy and safe for many people, the decision to give up meat is a serious choice that guarantees proper research. When done correctly, going vegetarian can be a highly positive step on your road to improve health and a more environmentally friendly. Make changes by increasing and before you know it, you will be meat-free and loving!
