Is factory farming real?

I'm in FFA and in an Animal Science class- which has been interesting, having to skin, cut up deer, etc. As a vegetarian that's not so fun. We were talking about factory farming and the teacher said that he doesn't believe there is such a thing as factory farming. The USDA states that 96% of the farms in the U.S. are family owned. What does everyone think? Is factory farming real? Or is the USDA right?
